FAQs

1. Can I drive on a British license?

If you have a license from a Commonwealth country, then you are able to drive with that license here in Kenya for a period of 90 days.  If it is not a license from a Commonwealth country then you have to have an 'international' license. You do need to be over 25 years and have driven for more than 3 years.

2. What kind of insurance policy do you have?

See the policy brief on the right.

3. Do we (the client) have to fuel the vehicles at our expense?

Yes you do.

4. If we have a breakdown what do we do?

We have a 24 hour break-down service, with a team of excellent mechanics.  We send you out on your safari with a list of telephone numbers, so that you can contact us at any time.

5. How much does fuel/petrol/gas cost in Kenya?

Currently (2012) fuel/diesel/gas goes for slightly more than KSHS 120/ per litre.

6. What about fuel consumption of the cars?

You can use a rough guideline of 1 litre of diesel per 12 KM.

7. What is driving in Kenya like?

In Kenya we drive on the left hand side of the road. The traffic rules and regulations are much like the British system too. Although many roads have been improved, still the minor roads are of variable quality(poorly maintained gravel, potholes....) and many of the access roads to game parks are rough. Night driving is not recommended mainly because of poorly lit vehicles, pedestrains and bicyclists without lights.

8. What is your immediate response to an accident?

Firstly, your health and safety is most important. Are the clients injured? We strongly advice our clients to purchase a temporary insurance with "Flying Doctors". This is very reasonably priced and enables you to be aero-evacuated from any location within Kenya whether sick or injured as soon as possible. Otherwise your safety is paramount and we will get to you soonest.

Being a wildlife photographer I needed a vehicle that was reliable, tough, easy to drive and with several vantage points to take photos from. The vehicle fitted the bill on all these. Not sure how any car survives the Kenyan roads but our defender had no problems. We went to Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara, not really expecting too much but came away with some great shots. The camping kit was spot on, camping on the Mara was incredible watching a pride of lions on the other side of the river just after the sun had dropped and tucking into our camp food by the fire. Patrick’s help up front with bookings and suggestions made the trip go smoothly. When I return I will be using Roving Rovers again.
